Online Glasses vs High Street Opticians UK

Online Glasses vs High Street Opticians UK

The Honest Comparison

Published by Direct Sight | Eye Care Guide

The way people buy glasses in the UK has changed significantly. A decade ago, almost everyone bought their glasses in-store; Specsavers, Boots, Vision Express, or their local independent optician. Today, a growing number of people get their eyes tested on the high street and order their glasses online. Saving a substantial amount of money without sacrificing optical quality.

If you are trying to decide between buying online or in-store, this guide gives you a straightforward, honest comparison. Covering cost, quality, choice, convenience, and when each option genuinely makes more sense.

We are Direct Sight, an online prescription glasses retailer making glasses at our UK production facility in Amersham, Buckinghamshire.

Are online glasses as good as high street?

This is the first question most people ask, and it is entirely reasonable. The answer, for the vast majority of prescriptions, is yes.

Reputable UK online retailers use the same lens materials, glazing processes, and quality standards as high street opticians. At Direct Sight, every pair of glasses is produced at our UK facility. Made by our qualified optical team to the same standards you would expect from a high street practice.

A lens made in a UK optical lab to your exact prescription will perform the same as if purchased from a high street store.

Where the high street does offer something genuinely different is in the in-person dispensing experience. A professional measuring your pupillary distance, adjusting your frames on your face, and advising on complex prescriptions. For most standard single vision prescriptions, this difference is minimal in practice. For varifocals and high-complexity prescriptions, it is worth considering more carefully, and we address this directly later.

Glasses online cheaper than opticians, how big is the difference?

The price gap between online and high street glasses in the UK is substantial. Below is a comparison between the average highstreet price and our prices.

Glasses Type High Street Direct Sight
Single vision - entry level £45.00-£70.00 From £9.00
Varifocal glasses £150.00-£400.00+ From £54.00
Anti-reflective coating add on £20.00-£50.00 extra £12.50
Production & dispatch time 7-14 working days 1-7 working days
Returns policy Varies by retailer 30 days, free exchange

Prices quoted are estimates based on publicly available retailer pricing as of early 2026. High street prices vary significantly between chains and between individual branches.

At Direct Sight, pricing is transparent and all-inclusive, no surprise coatings add-ons at checkout.

Online Glasses vs High Street Opticians UK

Buying glasses online vs in-store UK, what you gain and what you give up

What you gain by buying online:

Price. As covered above, the saving is significant and consistent. Buying online removes the retail overhead entirely, and those savings translate directly into lower prices for customers.

Choice. A high street optician is limited by shelf space. An online retailer has no such constraint. At Direct Sight you can browse our full range of frames for men and women any time, without any sales pressure.

No upselling pressure. Online, you choose exactly what you want, add what you need at clearly marked prices. There is no pressure to upgrade to thinner lenses, more expensive coatings or add extended warranties.

Speed. Many people assume the high street is faster. In practice, high street opticians typically take 7 to 14 days to produce glasses. At Direct Sight, most single vision orders are dispatched within 3 to 5 working days. Our Next Day Express service offers same-day dispatch on eligible single vision prescriptions ordered before 3pm on weekday.

Clear consumer rights. At Direct Sight, our terms are transparent: 30 day returns, free exchanges on all orders, and a 365 day workmanship guarantee. High street policies vary considerably between retailers and individual branches.

What you give up by buying online:

The ability to try frames before ordering. You cannot physically pick up frames in a shop and see how they sit on your face before buying. This concern is significantly reduced by a generous returns and exchange policy at Direct Sight. You have 30 days, and frames can be exchanged free of charge. Detailed frame measurements including width, bridge size, and arm length are listed for every frame on our site.

Immediate in-store adjustments. High street opticians offer on-the-spot frame adjustments. With online orders, minor adjustments can usually be made at home or by a local optician. Direct Sight customers can return glasses to us for adjustment at no charge.

Pupillary distance measurement. The measurement between the centres of your pupils is needed for accurate glazing. UK opticians are legally obliged to provide a copy of your prescription. But may not provide your PD measurement. For complex prescriptions, professional PD measurement is recommended.

Online glasses vs high street, when each makes sense

Rather than declaring one option universally better. The honest answer is that the right choice depends on your prescription and circumstances.

Online is typically the better choice when:

You have a standard single vision prescription, the majority of glasses wearers in the UK.

You have bought glasses before and have a clear sense of the frame shapes and sizes that suit you.

You are buying a second or spare pair alongside an existing pair.

Budget is a consideration, which for most people, it is.

You want access to a wider range of frame styles than a single store can offer.

In-store may be the better choice when:

It is your very first time getting prescription glasses and you have no reference point for frame sizing.

You have a complex or high-power prescription and want a dispensing optician to optimise lens placement.

You are getting your first pair of varifocal or progressive lenses, an experienced dispenser adds real value here.

You prefer to support a trusted local independent optician.

A popular approach among UK glasses buyers, well-documented in consumer forums. Is to have an eye test on the high street, collect the prescription, and then order frames and lenses online. This way you receive professional eye care and the expertise of an optician for the test itself, while paying online prices for the glasses.

Why Direct Sight is the smarter choice for most UK glasses buyers

At Direct Sight, we are not trying to replace the eye test. We actively encourage our customers to have regular sight tests with a qualified optician at least every two years. What we offer is a high-quality, UK-manufactured alternative to high street glasses prices. Frequently Asked Questions

Are online glasses as good as high street glasses in the UK?

For the vast majority of prescriptions, yes. Reputable UK online retailers use the same lens materials, manufacturing processes, and quality standards as high street opticians. The optical accuracy of a prescription lens is determined by the glazing process, not by where it was purchased.

Direct Sight manufactures all glasses at our UK facility in Amersham, checked by our qualified optical team before dispatch.

Are glasses online cheaper than at opticians in the UK?

Consistently, yes. The price difference reflects the cost of running a retail premises, not any difference in optical quality. Online retailers remove that overhead and pass the savings to customers. Prescription glasses start from just £9.00 at Direct Sight.

How do I buy glasses online if I don't have my pupillary distance?

Your PD (pupillary distance) is the measurement between the centres of your pupils and is needed for accurate lens glazing. You can ask your optician if you do not know your PD. However, some opticians charge a small fee for this if you are not purchasing glasses from them.

You can measure your PD at home using a ruler and a mirror. Visit our how to measure your PD guide for full details on how to do this. There are also free online PD measurement tool that you could use.

Can I order varifocals online?

Yes, and many people successfully do. Direct Sight offers varifocal lenses for a range of prescriptions. However, for people getting their very first pair of varifocals, an in-person dispensing appointment is worth considering. An experienced dispensing optician can help optimise frame choice and lens position for comfort.

If you already wear varifocals successfully and want a new pair at a better price. Ordering online is a straightforward and cost effective option.

What if online glasses don't fit properly when they arrive?

At Direct Sight, all orders come with a 30 day no-quibble returns policy and free exchanges. If the frames do not suit your face or feel uncomfortable, you can exchange them for a different pair. Minor frame adjustments can be made at home, see our guide how to adjust your frame for full details.

Direct Sight customers can return glasses to us for adjustment. Frame dimensions including width, bridge size, and arm length are listed on every product page. This allows you to check the fit against frames you already own.

Is it safe to buy prescription glasses online in the UK?

Yes, online shopping for prescription glasses is safe, provided you use a reputable UK-based retailer. Direct Sight lenses are manufactured in the UK by our qualified optical team, to the precise measurements of your prescription. We offer comparable high quality lens options, and lens coatings as when buying glasses in store.

How long does it take to receive glasses ordered online vs in-store?

High street opticians typically advise 7 to 14 days for glasses to be ready. At Direct Sight, the majority of single vision orders are dispatched within 3 to 7 working days, with complex prescriptions or varifocals taking up to 7 to 14 working days. Our Next Day Express service offers same-day dispatch on eligible single vision prescriptions ordered before 3pm on weekdays. The delivery time after dispatch is dependant on the postal option selected at checkout.

Can I use my NHS optical voucher to buy glasses online?

NHS optical vouchers are available to those on certain benefits, children under 16, those under 19 in full-time education, and people with certain complex prescription needs. Unfortunately we can not currently accept NHS optical vouchers for online purchases at Direct Sight.

Can I get my eyes tested online?

Eye tests must be carried out by a qualified optometrist in person. They cannot be conducted online. You will need to visit a high street optician or independent practice for your eye test.

Once you have your prescription, you can order your glasses online with Direct Sight.

We encourage all customers to have regular eye tests at least every two years.
