Prescription Glasses with a Colour Tint

Prescription Glasses with a Colour Tint

Not sunglasses. Something better.

Published by Direct Sight | Lens Centre

One of the most directional eyewear trends of 2026, prescription lenses with a soft tint that adds warmth, personality and an editorial quality to any frame.

A light-to-medium colour tint on your prescription lenses adds warmth and character to a frame, without reducing light enough to make them impractical indoors or in low light.

The result is glasses that feel fashion-forward and personal, and still work day to day. They pair well with a plain metal frame, a bold acetate shape or a transparent style. The tint becomes the detail that lifts the whole look.

At Direct Sight, you can add a fashion tint to lenses pairable with our frames. Produced at our UK facility in Amersham, Buckinghamshire.

Tinted lenses vs sunglasses, at a glance

Range of tints

The four light tinted lenses options, and what each lenses offer

Each tint colour brings a distinct mood and works differently depending on your skin tone, frame, and the effect you want to achieve.

Amber

Amber

POPULAR

The most directional tint of 2026. Warm amber and honey tones create a retro, slightly sun-drenched quality. This works with everything from minimal metal frames to bold acetate.

Amber tints enhance contrast and reduce glare, the perfect combination for every daywear. They can reduce exposure to blue light from screens which may help reduce eye strain during long screen sessions.

Grey

Grey

MOST NATURAL COLOUR

The most wearable tint for everyday use. Grey is colour-neutral, it reduces brightness and glare without altering how you perceive colours. The best colour choice for driving, especially in bright light conditions.

Grey tinted lenses offer subtle sun protection (although not as dark as tinted sunglasses). They help reduce squinting and eye strain.

Rose

Rose

COMFORT, WARMTH & STYLE

A soft rose, blush or pink tint carries a romantic, artistic quality. Rose tints have a gentle warming effect on skin tones and a flattering softness in portraits and everyday environments. They pair beautifully with transparent or minimal frames where the tint becomes the entire focal point.

Rose tint can enhance visual comfort, reduce eye strain and improve contrast. Helping things appear clearer and more defined.

Green

Green

BALANCED CLARITY & COMFORT

The most artistic and distinctive tint choice. Soft olive and sage green tint have been seen in collections from Tom Ford and Celine for 2026.

Green lenses reduce brightness while keeping colours true with slightly enhanced contrast. They work across both warm and cool skin tones, and have a particularly strong impact when paired with a clear or tortoiseshell frame. Green tinted lenses reduce glare and enhance contrast.

Understanding tint strength

Tint categories explained, how strong is your tint?

Lens tints are divided into four categories based on how much light they allow through. This determines when and where they’re suitable to wear.

Tinted glasses Everyday wear - Cat. 1 or 2 Sunglasses Outdoor use - Cat. 3 or 4
Transmits 43 to 100% of visible light Transmits 3 to 25% of visible light
Suitable for indoor and outdoor everyday use Designed for bright sunlight and outdoor environments only
Adds colour and personality without significantly reducing light Blocks 75 to 97% of visible light, too dark for most indoor use
Does not significantly affect colour perception Protect your eyes from UV rays and glare reduction
A style and aesthetic choice for everyday glasses Not suitable as everyday prescription eyewear

Not sure which frame shape to tint?

A tinted lens works on any frame, but the combination of tint and frame shape can be particularly striking. Find a frame that suits your style and features by using our frames and face shape guide.

How to wear tinted lenses

  1. Let the tint be the detail Pair a tinted lens with a minimal, transparent, or fine metal frame. The tint becomes the only decorative element, a single considered choice rather than competing with a bold frame colour.
  2. Match tint to your wardrobe Amber and warm tints integrate naturally with earthy, warm-toned wardrobes. Grey works across any palette. Rose suits softer, lighter dressing. Green pairs well with natural and botanical tones.
  3. Complement your skin tone Warm tints, amber, rose, flatter warm and neutral complexions. Grey is the most universal and works on everyone. Green works across both warm and cool tones. When in doubt, grey is always a safe starting point.
  4. Use it as a spare or second pair Many Direct Sight customers keep a tinted pair as an alternative to their everyday glasses.  The same prescription, a different character. Our prices make running two pairs well within reach, frames from £9.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are tinted prescription glasses?

Tinted prescription glasses are prescription glasses, with a light-to-medium colour tint applied to the lenses. Unlike sunglasses, the tint is designed for everyday indoor and outdoor wear. The tint adds warmth and personality to the frame without significantly reducing light transmission or making them impractical indoors.

Are tinted prescription glasses the same as sunglasses?

No. Sunglasses carry a darker tint, typically Category 3 or 4, that blocks 75 to 97% of visible light . Dark tinted sunglasses are designed for bright outdoor sunlight.

Tinted prescription glasses carry a much lighter tint (Category 1 or 2) that adds colour and character. They are suitable for everyday use indoors and outdoors. But they are not a replacement for sunglasses in full sun as they do not offer the same UV protection.

Which tint colour is right for me?

Grey is the most versatile, colour-neutral, universally flattering on every skin tone, and the most subtle visually. If you are choosing your first tint, grey is the natural starting point.

Amber and warm tones suit warm or neutral complexions and create a retro, editorial quality.

Rose is soft and flattering for cooler or lighter complexions, and pairs beautifully with transparent or minimal frames.

Green has an artistic, directional quality and works across both warm and cool skin tones.

Can I get varifocal lenses with a tint?

Yes. At Direct Sight you can add a tint option to both single vision and varifocal lenses. Varifocal tinted lenses take slightly longer to produce than single vision tinted lenses. Contact our team at help@directsight.co.uk or call 01494 307 345 if you need guidance on the best lens and tint for your prescription.

Will a tint affect how clearly I can see?

A light tint provides gentle light reduction and can be used indoors or outdoors. Some people with photosensitive eyes or those who spend long periods at screens find beneficial. The refractive correction in your lenses is unaffected you will see just as clearly through a tinted lens as through a standard one.

How long do tinted prescription glasses take to make?

Tinted lenses require additional processing steps compared to standard clear lenses. Tinted lens orders take 7 to 10 working days to produce and dispatch from our UK facility in Amersham. Visit our production timescales guide for full details.

Are tinted glasses a big trend in 2026?

Yes. Prescription glasses with subtle colour tints are one of the most popular eyewear trends of 2026. Seen across UK, seen in collections from Tom Ford, Celine, and Haider Ackermann for Spring/Summer 2026.

The trend draws from a broader movement toward eyewear as a deliberate personal style statement. Glasses chosen as much for their aesthetic as their function. Tinted lenses are an easy and relatively low-cost way to significantly update a look.
