Next Day Express, everything You Need to Know

Next Day Express, everything You Need to Know

Published by Direct Sight | Eye Care Guide

This page explains exactly how the Next Day Express service works, from the moment you place your order to the moment your glasses arrive. It covers prescription eligibility, which lens options are available, how postage works, what same-day production involves, and the full service terms.

If you are ready to browse frames and order, visit the Next Day Express glasses page.

What 'Next Day Express' Actually Means

The term 'Next Day Express' refers to same-day dispatch, not automatic next-day delivery. Understanding this distinction is important before you order.

By selecting the Next Day Express service, your glasses will be made and dispatched on the same day you order. If you order before 3pm Monday to Friday. Delivery speed depends on the Royal Mail postage option you choose at checkout.

Here is what that means in practice:

  1. You order before 3pm on a weekday, your glasses enter production in our Amersham laboratory the same day.
  2. Your glasses are made, quality-checked and packed the same day. Ready for dispatch that evening.
  3. They are collected by Royal Mail and delivered to you according to the postage option you selected at checkout.

How Your Glasses Are Made on the Same Day

Every Next Day Express order is produced in our own optical laboratory in Amersham, Buckinghamshire. Here is what happens from the moment you complete your order:

Step 1 - Order confirmation and prescription verification

Your order is received and your prescription values are reviewed by our optical team. We check that your SPH, CYL, Axis and PD values fall within the eligible range for same-day production. If any value is outside the range, our team will contact you promptly rather than produce an incorrect pair. Payment is taken in full before production begins.

Step 2 - Frame and lens preparation

Your chosen frame is pulled from stock and inspected for quality. Lens blanks are selected according to your prescription values and the lens type you ordered. Single vision clear, tinted, or with your chosen upgrade coating. The correct lens material and index are confirmed at this stage.

Step 3 - Lens cutting and surfacing

Your lenses are precision-cut to match your exact frame shape using state-of-the-art, computer-controlled robotic edging equipment.

Step 4 - Assembly and mounting

The cut lenses are mounted into your chosen frame by our laboratory technicians. Frame alignment is checked to ensure the lenses sit at the correct angle and height for your prescription.

Screw tension, nose pad position and temple alignment are adjusted as needed.

Step 5 - Seven-point quality check

Every pair, including Next Day Express orders, goes through our seven-point quality check.

This covers: lens prescription accuracy (measured against your written prescription), centration (optical centre alignment), lens surface quality, coating integrity, UV protection verification, frame straightness, and overall finish.

A pair that does not pass at any point is remade, not dispatched.

Step 6 - Dispensing optician inspection

Before packing, every pair is reviewed by a qualified dispensing optician. This is a professional optical review, not an administrative sign-off. The optician confirms that the lenses are correctly prescribed and mounted, and that the finished pair meets our optical standards. This step applies to every Next Day Express order without exception.

Step 7 - Packing and dispatch

Your glasses are then packed securely along with any accessories that may have been purchased. They are labelled with your chosen Royal Mail tracked service and handed to Royal Mail for collection. You receive an email with dispatch confirmation and tracking information when your glasses leave our laboratory.

Prescription Eligibility for Same-Day Dispatch

Same-day dispatch is available for single vision prescriptions within a specific range. The table below covers every lens type and shows exactly what is and is not eligible. If a lens type is not listed as eligible, standard production timescales apply, your glasses will still be made in our UK laboratory to the same standard, they simply require more time.

Lens type Prescription range Same-day dispatch What this means
Single vision clear Up to Sph ± 5.00, Cyl ± 2.00 ✓ Yes  The most common prescription type.  Covers short-sightedness, long-sightedness and most astigmatism corrections

Not sure if your prescription qualifies? Your SPH and CYL values appear on the written prescription your optician gives you after an eye examination. If both values fall within +/-5.00 sphere and +/-2.00 cylinder, you are eligible for same-day dispatch. We have put together this guide how to read your prescription.

If your prescription is outside the eligible range, do not order under Next Day Express. Your order will be flagged and may cause a delay. Contact us first and we will confirm the fastest available option for your prescription.

Next Day Express Service Terms

Same-Day Dispatch Commitment

Direct Sight commits to dispatch eligible Next Day Express orders on the same working day, provided the order is received in full, including completed payment and a valid prescription, before the 3pm cutoff. 'Dispatch' means your glasses are handed to Royal Mail for collection that day. Delivery timescales are determined by the Royal Mail postage option selected and are subject to Royal Mail's standard service conditions.

Order Cutoff, 3pm Monday to Friday

Our same-day dispatch cut-off is 3pm (UK time), Monday to Friday.

Orders placed after 3pm, or orders with incomplete payment or prescription details at 3pm, will be processed on the next working day.

Any orders placed on a bank holiday will be processed on the next available working day.

The 3pm cut-off applies once your order has been fully accepted into our system and released into production.

Prescription Eligibility

Same-day dispatch is available for single vision prescriptions up to ±5.00 sphere (SPH) and ±2.00 cylinder (CYL).

Prescriptions outside this range are not eligible for the Next Day Express service and will be subject to standard production timescales.

If your prescription falls outside the eligible range, Direct Sight Customer Service will contact you before production begins. You will have the option to proceed with standard production (with the Next Day Express fee refunded) or to cancel your order for a full refund.

Direct Sight also reserves the right to contact you before production begins if there are any queries regarding the prescription values provided.

Valid Prescription Requirement

A valid, current prescription from a registered optician is required for all orders. In the UK, adult prescriptions are typically valid for two years from the date of examination. Direct Sight will not produce glasses from a prescription that appears expired or invalid. If you are unsure whether your prescription is valid, contact your optician before ordering.

Lens Types Eligible for Same-Day Dispatch

Same-day dispatch applies to single vision clear, single vision tinted (prescription sunglasses) and single vision with anti-reflective coating upgrade, within the eligible prescription range. Varifocal, bifocal, photochromic, polarised and blue light lenses are not eligible for Next Day Express. High-index lens eligibility depends on prescription specifics, contact us before ordering. The full eligibility table is in Part 3 of this page.

Pricing, what Is Included

All Next Day Express frames include standard, uncoated single vision prescription lenses in the frame price. Additional lens options and upgrades are available at checkout.

The Next Day Express fee covers priority production of your glasses and is separate from the delivery charge. Delivery costs and estimated arrival times after dispatch will depend on the postage option you select at checkout.

Order Cancellation

Orders can be cancelled for a full refund as long as production has not started. Production may begin within minutes of order confirmation (especially before 3pm), so cancellation may not always be possible. If you need to cancel, please contact us as soon as possible on 01494 307 345.

If production is already underway, we will advise on the available options, which may include an exchange or return under our standard returns policy.

Returns and Remedies

Next Day Express orders are covered by Direct Sight's standard 30 day returns policy and 100% satisfaction guarantee. If your glasses arrive and are not correct, whether the prescription, lenses or frames are not as expected. Contact us immediately on 01494 307 345 or help@directsight.co.uk.

We will arrange for your glasses to be inspected, remade if necessary, and returned to you as quickly as possible. The 12-month scratch guarantee and 365 day warranty apply to all Next Day Express orders on the same terms as standard orders. For full returns information, see our returns policy.

Quality Standards

The Next Day Express service does not reduce or modify Direct Sight's quality standards. Every pair produced under this service goes through the same seven-point quality check.

A pair that does not pass the quality check is remade before dispatch. Even if this causes a delay. If a remake is required and cannot be completed within the same-day dispatch window, we will contact you to advise on the revised timescale.

Supply to Under-16s

Direct Sight does not supply prescription glasses or sunglasses to persons under the age of 16. All orders, including Next Day Express orders, are available to adults aged 16 and over only. By placing an order, you confirm that the glasses are for a person aged 16 or over.

Limitation of Liability for Delivery Delays

Once your glasses have been dispatched and a Royal Mail tracking reference has been provided, delivery timescales are subject to Royal Mail's standard service conditions. Direct Sight accepts no liability for delays caused by Royal Mail, including but not limited to courier delays, weather disruption or failed delivery attempts.

In the event of a Royal Mail delay, we will assist in raising a query with Royal Mail and provide appropriate remedies where possible. Our liability for late delivery is limited to a refund of any postage cost paid where the service level is not met by Royal Mail.

Changes to the Next Day Express Service

Direct Sight reserves the right to modify or withdraw the Next Day Express service at any time, including changes to the order cutoff time, prescription eligibility range, eligible lens types or postage options. Any changes will be reflected on this page and on the Next Day Express product listing page. Orders placed before a change takes effect are fulfilled under the terms in place at the time of ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between 'same-day dispatch' and 'next-day delivery'?

Same-day dispatch means your glasses are made and handed to Royal Mail on the day you order, not that they will necessarily arrive the following day.

Next day delivery is only guaranteed if you select DPD Delivery at checkout, which guarantees delivery before 1pm on the next working day. Royal Mail Tracked 24 targets next working day delivery but is not guaranteed. Royal Mail Tracked 48 delivers within 2 working days of dispatch. The 'next day' in our service name refers to the speed of production and dispatch, your glasses leave us the same day. Delivery speed depends on your postage choice.

How are my glasses physically made on the same day?

Once your order is confirmed and payment received before 3pm, it enters our Amersham laboratory queue immediately.

Our optical technicians cut and surface your lenses to your prescription, mount them into your chosen frame, and pass the finished pair through our seven-point quality check. All within the same working day. We hold a stock of eligible frames and lens blanks specifically to support same-day production. The process from confirmed order to dispatch typically takes three to five hours for eligible orders.

What lens upgrades can I add to a Next Day Express order?

The following lens upgrades are available on Next Day Express orders within the eligible prescription range: anti-reflective coating, anti-scratch coating, and tinted lenses (prescription sunglasses). The option to upgrade to 1.6 high index lenses is also available.

Varifocal, bifocal, photochromic (Transitions® and Adaptions®) polarised and blue light lens upgrades are not available on Next Day Express

What happens if my prescription is outside the eligible range?

If you attempt to order under Next Day Express with a prescription outside +/-5.00 sphere and +/-2.00 cylinder, our optical team will identify this during prescription verification after your order is placed.

We will contact you before production begins to let you know the realistic production timescale for your prescription.

Can I cancel or change my order after placing it?

Cancellations and changes are possible provided production has not yet started. Next Day Express orders may enter production within minutes of a confirmed order. So it is important to contact us immediately on 01494 307 345 if you need to make a change.

If your glasses are already being made, we may not be able to stop production. In which case we will advise on your options under our returns policy. Changes to prescription details after production has started are not possible without a full remake, which will affect the delivery timescale.

What if my glasses arrive and the prescription is not correct?

Contact us immediately on 01494 307 345 or help@directsight.co.uk with your order number and a description of the issue.

Every pair we produce is checked against the prescription values you provided, so the first step is confirming whether the issue is with production or with the prescription itself. If the issue stems from the prescription values you provided, we will remake your glasses free of charge and arrange the fastest possible return. All Next Day Express orders carry the same 30 day returns policy and 100% satisfaction guarantee as standard orders.

Does the 3pm cutoff apply on Fridays the same as other weekdays?

Yes. The 3pm cutoff applies equally Monday to Friday.

An order placed before 3pm on Friday will be made and dispatched on Friday. With Royal Mail Tracked 24, your glasses would be delivered on Monday (the next working day). With Royal Mail Tracked 48, delivery is within 2 working days of dispatch, typically Tuesday or Wednesday.

Courier Next Day Delivery guarantees Monday delivery if ordered and dispatched on Friday before 3pm. We can not guarantee delivery on Sundays for any of the tracked services.

What if my glasses do not arrive within the expected Royal Mail timeframe?

Contact us on 01494 307 345 or help@directsight.co.uk as soon as possible. We will check your dispatch confirmation, verify the tracking status with Royal Mail and advise on next steps.

Royal Mail Tracked 24 and Tracked 48 are aim based services, they are not guaranteed within a specific number of days. DPD Delivery is the only guaranteed timed service. If Royal Mail has not met the service level, we will refund the postage cost. If your glasses appear lost in transit, we will work with you and Royal Mail to resolve the situation.

Do I need a valid prescription to order under Next Day Express?

Yes. A valid, in-date prescription from a registered optician is required for all orders. In the UK, adult prescriptions are typically valid for two years from the date of your eye examination. You will need your SPH, CYL, Axis and PD values, these all appear on your written prescription. You should not use a prescription that has expired or that you are unsure about.

What is the returns policy for Next Day Express orders?

Next Day Express orders are covered by our standard 30 day returns policy. If your glasses are not right for any reason, prescription, fit, lenses or frames, contact us within 30 days of receiving them. We will arrange a return, exchange or remake depending on the circumstances. The 12-month scratch guarantee and 365 day warranty apply to all orders, including Next Day Express.

Can I add a second pair of glasses to a Next Day Express order?

Yes, you can order multiple pairs in one checkout.

However, Next Day Express must be selected for each individual pair where the service is required. The Next Day Express charge applies to each qualifying pair separately.

Any frame that is not selected with Next Day Express will be processed under our standard production timescales.

If one pair qualifies for same day dispatch and another does not (for example, if one pair has varifocal lenses), each will follow its own production timescale. The Next Day Express pair will be dispatched the same day; the standard production pair will follow its own timeline.

You will receive separate dispatch notifications for each pair if they are sent at different times.
