Varifocals Explained
Everything you need to know

What Are Varifocal Prescription Glasses?
Varifocal glasses (also known as progressive glasses or multifocal glasses) are a lens that corrects vision at multiple distances. The prescription changes gradually from top to bottom.
The upper portion corrects distance vision. The middle intermediate distances such as a computer screen or dashboard. The lower portion corrects near vision for reading and close-up tasks.
Because the transition between zones is smooth, there is no visible dividing line. This is what distinguishes a varifocal from a bifocal.
You may also see varifocals referred to as progressive lenses or progressive addition lenses (PAL). These are the same thing. 'Varifocal' is the more common term in the UK. 'Varifocal glasses UK' is now one of the most-searched terms in online for prescription glasses.
Who Needs Varifocal Glasses?
Varifocal glasses are prescribed for people with presbyopia. A natural, age-related change in the eye that reduces its ability to shift focus between distances. It is caused by the gradual stiffening of the crystalline lens inside the eye and typically begins in the mid-forties.
Early signs of presbyopia include difficulty reading small print, needing to hold things farther away to focus, and feeling eye strain when using screens.
If your optician gives you a reading prescription alongside your distance prescription, varifocal lenses are usually the recommended. They replace the need to carry and switch between separate distance and reading glasses.
How Do Varifocal Lenses Work?
A progressive lens transitions gradually through multiple prescriptions. Distance power at the top through an intermediate power in the middle, to near power at the bottom of the lens. All varifocal lenses have peripheral distortion at the outer sides, areas where the transition creates some softness. Good varifocal lens design minimises these peripheral zones and maximises the width of each viewing corridor.
Traditional varifocals were made using standard moulds. Modern freeform lenses are digitally designed for each individual prescription, helping to optimise vision. The result is a wider area of clear sight, reduced edge distortion, and often an easier adjustment period.
Every Direct Sight varifocal, including the entry-level Basic, is a freeform digital design. Premium varifocal lenses at affordable prices.

Varifocal vs Bifocal, what Is the Difference?
Varifocal lenses have three prescription zones, distance, intermediate and near, with no visible line. Bifocal lenses have two zones divided by a visible line, with no intermediate correction.
For most people who use screens or drive alongside reading, varifocals are the recommended choice. For a full comparison of cost, comfort, frames, and lifestyle fit, see our guide Varifocal vs Bifocal glasses.
What Is Freeform Varifocal Technology?
Freeform, also called digital progressive, is the manufacturing method used to produce modern varifocal lenses. Freeform technology uses computer-aided design to calculate the precise lens surface for your individual prescription. All Direct Sight varifocal lenses are digitally produced freeform progressives.
Practical benefits of freeform varifocal lenses UK wearers notice most include:
✓ A wider central corridor of clear vision at all distances.
✓ Reduced peripheral distortion at the edges of the lens.
✓ More precise intermediate vision, particularly noticeable for screen and dashboard use.
✓ A shorter and more comfortable adaptation period for most wearers.

Adjusting to Varifocal Glasses
Most wearers adapt to varifocal glasses within one to two weeks. Consistent full-time wear from day one is the most important factor, switching between old and new pairs extends the process. Frequently Asked Questions
Can You Buy Varifocal Glasses Online?
Yes. It’s safe and easy to buy varifocals online in the UK if you have a valid prescription from your optician. Your prescription should include your distance values (SPH, CYL, AXIS for each eye) and your Add value. Direct Sight's online ordering process walks you through each stage, prescription entry, lens selection, and optional upgrades.

What does presbyopia mean?
Presbyopia is the age-related loss of the eye's ability to shift focus between distances. It is a normal part of ageing that affects most people from their mid-forties. Varifocal glasses are the most common optical solution. For more details visit what is presbyopia in our eyecare and education section.
What does the 'Add' value on my prescription mean?
The Add (reading addition) value on your prescription indicates the extra lens power required for near vision. It is always a positive number, typically between +0.75 and +3.50. If you have an Add value, varifocal or bifocal lenses are an option to correct both distance and reading.
Are freeform varifocals better than standard varifocals?
Yes, for most wearers. Freeform varifocal lenses are digitally produced to your individual prescription. Producing a wider field of clear vision and less peripheral distortion than traditional moulded varifocals. All Direct Sight varifocal lenses are freeform designs.
Do varifocal glasses have any disadvantages?
All varifocal lenses have some peripheral distortion where the prescription transitions at the outer edges. Higher-quality freeform designs reduce this significantly. An adjustment period of one to two weeks is often required. Particularly those switching from single-vision lenses for the first time.
What is the difference between varifocal and progressive lenses?
There is no difference, varifocal and progressive are two names for the same lens type. 'Varifocal' is the more common term in the UK; 'progressive' is more widely used internationally.
Can I get varifocals if I only have a distance prescription?
No. Varifocal lenses are only appropriate when you have both a distance prescription and a reading addition (Add value). If your prescription has no Add value, a pair of glasses with single-vision lenses are correct for your needs.
Will the NHS cover varifocal glasses?
NHS optical vouchers may be used as a contribution toward progressive lenses UK, with any difference above the voucher value needing to be paid. Entitlement depends on personal circumstances, contact your local optical practice for specific details. Unfortunately Direct Sight do not accept NHS vouchers as method of payment for glasses ordered online.
What is the difference between an Office Lens and a standard varifocal?
A standard varifocal covers distance, intermediate and near vision, suitable for all daily activities including driving. The Office Lens covers only intermediate and reading, with a significantly wider corridor for screen and desk work. It has no distance correction and must not be used for driving.
