See More Clearly Outdoors

Polarised sunglasses use a special lens that blocks horizontally reflected light, the intense reflective glare from surfaces like water, wet roads, sand, snow, and glass that standard tinted lenses don’t eliminate. This results in sharper, more comfortable vision, with improved contrast, richer colours, and reduced eye strain in bright conditions. All Direct Sight polarised sunglasses include 100% UVA and UVB protection, carry the CE mark.

FAQ's

What is the difference between polarised and standard tinted sunglasses?

Standard tinted sunglasses offer reduced overall brightness of light reaching your eyes. But they do not offer anti glare from reflective surfaces.

Polarised sunglasses contain a vertical filter that blocks horizontally reflected light, the type of intense glare that bounces off roads, the surface of water, sand and glass. The benefits of polarised lenses include significantly sharper, more comfortable vision in bright outdoor conditions. For driving, sport and outdoor activities, polarised lenses offer a clear advantage over standard tinted lenses.

Are polarised sunglasses good for driving?

Yes. Polarised driving glasses are widely recommended for daytime driving in bright conditions. They cut glare from wet road surfaces, other vehicles and low sun, reducing eye strain on long journeys. Grey polarised lenses are the most popular choice for driving as they reduce brightness without distorting colour perception. Note: polarised lenses are not suitable for driving at night and some drivers find they affect the visibility of certain LCD dashboard displays.

What are the best polarised lenses in the UK?

The best polarised lenses UK combine a high-quality polarising filter with full UV400 protection and a CE mark. Premium lenses provide consistent glare elimination across the full lens surface with no optical distortion. At Direct Sight, all polarised sunglasses are CE marked and protect your eyes from harmful UV rays, with 100% UVA and UVB protection.

Can I test if sunglasses are genuinely polarised?

Yes. Hold two pairs of polarised sunglasses with the lenses facing each other. Rotate one pair 90 degrees. Genuine polarised lenses will become very dark or appear opaque when rotated. This is because the two vertical filters are now perpendicular and blocking all light.

If no darkening occurs, the lenses are not polarised.

Are polarised sunglasses suitable for all outdoor activities?

Polarised sunglasses are ideal for most outdoor activities including driving, fishing, cycling, hiking, beach use and water sports.

However, they are not recommended for activities that require reading LCD screens (some GPS units, phone screens and digital dashboards). Polarised lenses are not recommended as night driving glasses.

Do polarised sunglasses provide UV protection?

Polarisation and UV protection are two separate lens properties. A polarised lens blocks glare from reflected surfaces. UV protection blocks ultraviolet radiation from the sun.

All polarised sunglasses at Direct Sight include both: full polarisation to cut glare, and 100% UVA and UVB protection (UV400) to protect your eye health.

Are polarised sunglasses available in prescription versions?

Yes. Prescription polarised sunglasses are available at Direct Sight. Any frame in our prescription glasses collection can be upgraded with prescription polarised lenses. Polarised options are available in single vision, varifocal or bifocal.

Every pair of glasses with polarised prescription lenses is made in our Amersham optical lab. See our Prescription Polarised Sunglasses page for full details.

What to Look for When Buying Polarised Sunglasses in the UK

Not all sunglasses labelled polarised are equal in quality. When shopping for the best polarised lenses UK, look for these markers of quality:

  • CE mark or UV400 label, confirms the lenses block 99 to 100% of UVA and UVB radiation. This is the most important feature of any sunglasses.
  • Lens category, category 3 lenses (transmitting 8 to 18% of light) are suitable for most UK outdoor use and driving. Category 4 lenses are for high-altitude or intense light conditions only and are not suitable for driving.
  • Lens material, TAC (triacetate cellulose) is the most common polarised lens material. Polycarbonate and CR-39 offer greater impact resistance and are available in prescription versions.
  • Frame fit, for maximum glare elimination, choose a frame with close-fitting or wraparound sides that prevents light entering from the peripheral field.
  • Tint colour, grey for driving and everyday use. Brown or green for sport and variable conditions. Mirror coating for very bright environments.
