Varifocal glasses, also called progressive or multifocal glasses. Have a single lens that provides correction for distance, intermediate and near vision, with no visible lines. The prescription gradually changes from top to bottom.

They are prescribed for presbyopia. The age-related decline in the eye's ability to focus across distances that typically begins in the mid-forties.

Varifocal (or progressive) lenses provide clear vision at all distances in one pair of glasses. The lens include multiple prescriptions that gradually change from top to bottom. Allowing you to see far, intermediate, and near without switching glasses.

The top of the lens is for distance vision, the middle for tasks like computer use, and the bottom for reading or close work.

Because the change in power is gradual, there’s no visible line on the lens. This gives a more natural look and a comfortable viewing experience. All Direct Sight varifocal lenses are made using freeform digital technology, tailored to your exact prescription.

Varifocals are recommended when your optician provides a reading addition ('Add') alongside your distance prescription. This indicates your eyes can no longer easily focus at all distances from a single lens.

Varifocal lenses are designed to have three vision correction zones (distance, intermediate and near) with no visible line. Bifocals have two zones with distance in the main part of the lens and reading in the bottom of the lens. They have a visible dividing line and no intermediate correction.

Freeform or digital progressive lenses are produced using computer-aided design. With the lens surface calculated specifically for your individual prescription rather than a shared mould. Every Direct Sight varifocal, from the Basic tier upwards, is a freeform lens. Freeform lenses deliver a wider field of clear vision, less peripheral distortion, and typically an easier adaptation period compared to conventional varifocals.

The Elite is ideal for full-time wearers who want the widest possible field of vision and the smoothest experience. The Basic suits experienced varifocal wearers looking for a more cost-effective option.

The Office Lens is designed specifically for near and intermediate use. A great choice if you spend most of your day at a desk or on screens. A separate pair for distance glasses for driving may be needed.

The Office Lens is a progressive lens designed specifically for intermediate and near distances. The distances you work at when using a desk, computer or reading material.

It offers a noticeably wider near and mid-range corridor than a standard varifocal. However, it has no distance prescription zone and is not suitable for driving or general outdoor use. Most Office Lens wearers also keep a standard varifocal or distance pair for driving and outdoor activities.

Most wearers adapt within one to two weeks. Rather than switching between your old and new glasses it is advised to wear your new varifocals consistently. This is the most effective way to speed up the process of adjustment.

Yes. The upper portion of a varifocal lens is your distance prescription, which covers road and hazard awareness. The intermediate zone covers dashboard distances.

Varifocals are suitable for driving but allow your eyes a few days to fully adjust to a new pair before driving in them.

The Office Lens is the only exception, it has no distance zone and must not be used for driving.

Yes. Tinted varifocal lenses are available at checkout. All prescription varifocal sunglasses are made to your prescription in our UK laboratory.

Options include a range of tint colours, polarised lenses (recommended for driving and water sports) and photochromic lenses that automatically darken in sunlight. 

We recommend 30mm as the minimum lens height for varifocal lenses. This ensures all three prescription zones, distance, intermediate and reading, have sufficient depth to be usable. Frames below this can be fitted with varifocal lenses, but the reading corridor will be compressed. Lens depth is listed in the specifications on every product page.

Varifocal glasses are not eligible for our Next Day Express service. Standard production is typically 7-10 working days from your confirmed order. Once dispatched, delivery depends on your chosen Royal Mail postage option.
